Our activities
Copper and cobalt
The demand for refined metals such as copper and cobalt – which are used in energy storage, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence infrastructure and other technologies – is expected to grow.
Copper is a major industrial metal due to its high ductility, malleability, thermal and electrical conductivity and resistance to corrosion. It has a variety of uses, including in renewable energy technologies, construction, transportation, housing, telecommunications equipment, and electrical and electronic products.
Cobalt is expected to become one of the most important raw materials in the transition towards a low-carbon economy. Electric mobility, renewable energy systems and electronic devices such as laptops and mobile phones often contain cobalt.
The DRC has more than 60% of the world’s reserves in cobalt.
Mining operations
MUMI operates three open pit mines that provide ore feed to our copper and cobalt production facilities.
Operations at MUMI use techniques including fragmentation (drilling and mining), marinating, stockpiling, associated servicing, and dewatering. We process copper and cobalt using crushing, grinding, leaching, solid and liquid separation, solvent extraction and electroplating techniques.
MUMI is committed to promoting a transparent and traceable mining supply chain in the DRC. MUMI is certified by the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) and recently completed the Copper Mark assurance assessment, illustrating our commitment to responsible production.
