Mutanda Mining S.A.R.L (MUMI) is a producer of copper and cobalt based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, around 40 km east of the town of Kolwezi in the Lualaba Province. 

MUMI operates three open pit mines that provide ore feed to our copper and cobalt production facilities. 

In 2017, MUMI became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Glencore, one of the world’s largest diversified natural resource companies. 

In 2023, 5% of the capital of MUMI was transferred to the DRC State following the renewal of MUMI’s mining titles, as required by the 2018 DRC Mining Code. 

Our history

  • 2007 - Glencore purchases an initial stake in MUMI.
  • 2011 - In February, MUMI begins mining high-grade copper and cobalt ore.
  • 2017 - MUMI becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Glencore.
  • 2019 - MUMI is placed under ‘care and maintenance’ to reassess the potential of the deposits.
  • 2021 - In October, MUMI resumes processing of low grade stockpile.  
  • 2022-2023 - MUMI secures the renewal of its 3 main mining titles. 5% of Glencore’s shareholding in MUMI is transferred to the DRC State, as required by the 2018 DRC Mining Code.
  • 2024 - MUMI begins preparation for mining restart.
  • 2025 – MUMI is recognised for responsible production practices by the Copper Mark, becoming one of the first copper producers in Africa to be successfully awarded the Copper Mark against the new Risk Readiness Assessment (RRA) 3.0 standard.
  • 2025 – MUMI restarts mining operations.
